Lauren and Colby’s wedding day was filled with joy, love, and a bit of unexpected weather. This was a beautiful example of how rainy day wedding photos can still be magical, with a little preparation and the right mindset. I can’t speak for others, but I’m the wedding photographer who’s ready to take off my shoes and stand in a puddle if it means getting the perfect photo!
Lauren and Colby tied the knot at Our Savior’s Church in Lafayette, LA, with a classic and timeless aesthetic featuring shades of dusty blue. From the ceremony at the church where they first met to a lively reception at The Madison in Broussard, every moment was filled with love, laughter, and elegance. Because I came prepared, we were ready to improvise and the drizzles didn’t add any stress to the Heberts’ beautiful day!
Getting Ready with the Girls
The wedding morning began with lots of laughs and a pop of bubbly as Lauren and her bridesmaids got ready at a family friend’s home. Dressed in white pajamas and fuzzy slippers, the girls celebrated the bride and prayed over her in a touching moment.
First Look Photos on a Rainy Wedding Day
Preparation is key when you’re dealing with a rainy day wedding, and having a backup plan will allow everyone to stay calm and keep things on track without any added stress for the couple. I knew that rain was in the forecast, so I came prepared! Although we had planned to take first look photos outside, the drizzly weather quickly changed our plans and moved us indoors. I brought along my hand-painted backdrop to set up inside the church in case the weather got too bad to stay outside. This backup plan gave everyone peace of mind knowing we’d get beautiful photos no matter what.
Lauren planned a first look before the ceremony with her dad and brother first, then a big reveal with Colby. Scouting the church grounds the day before paid off, because I found a covered area with a clean, white wall under the church awning. This location provided the perfect spot for gorgeous portraits without the wedding party needing to step foot into the rain. As for me, I’m a photographer who won’t hesitate to stand in the rain with my assistant holding an umbrella in order to get the perfect shot—and that’s exactly what I did for Lauren and Colby!
Ceremony at Our Savior’s Church in Lafayette, LA
Lauren and Colby’s ceremony took place at Our Savior’s Church in Lafayette, the same place they met years ago. The church’s meaningful history for the couple made it the perfect place to exchange vows, rain or shine. With the bridesmaids in dusty blue dresses and white rose bouquets, Lauren walked down the aisle in her classic strapless gown, radiating joy. The rain outside only added to the intimacy of the moment as the couple promised forever to each other.
Fun-Filled Reception at The Madison
After the ceremony, Lauren and Colby’s guests gathered at The Madison in Broussard, LA, for a lively reception. The space featured their dusty blue color palette with classic white florals that set the tone for the evening. This fun-filled reception at The Madison allowed for plenty of unique, candid moments, including the couple’s late-night snack from Whataburger and fun photos wearing heart-shaped sunglasses. Rain didn’t stop the celebration—instead, it became a part of the story, adding a unique and unforgettable element to their day.
Tips for Preparing for Rainy Day Wedding Photos
1. Embrace the Clear Umbrella Look
One of my go-to tips for rainy day weddings is to bring some clear umbrellas. These allow you to stay dry while still letting natural light through, resulting in bright and beautiful photos. Consider getting a few of your own if you want more options to match your style!
2. Have a Backup Indoor or Covered Location
Always plan for a backup location in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. Whether it’s the getting-ready home, the church lobby, or your reception venue, make sure there’s a beautiful indoor or covered option for photos. For Lauren and Colby, the backdrop I brought with me ensured I could capture elegant portraits no matter where we ended up. I also recommend choosing a getting-ready location you’d be happy to take all of your portraits in, just in case.
3. Bring Weather-Friendly Attire
Comfort is key on a rainy wedding day. Consider wearing shoes that can handle the wet ground, or have a pair of flats ready for walking outdoors. Staying comfortable will make it easier to adapt and enjoy the day, no matter the weather.
4. Stay Flexible and Open-Minded
A rainy day wedding may require some changes to the original plan, but flexibility and a positive attitude can lead to some stunning and unique photos. Let your photographer handle the logistics so you can focus on enjoying every moment of your day. Rain can add a touch of romance to your story—you may just have to improvise a little. In my experience, rain on your wedding day really can be good luck!
A Timeless Love Story in the Rain
Lauren and Colby’s rainy day wedding proves that no amount of drizzly weather can dampen the joy and love shared on a wedding day. With the right preparation and a willingness to embrace the unexpected, their classic and timeless celebration was as beautiful as they had dreamed.
